Well, That Didn’t Work…
One of the best things about being an artist is that there are very few hard-and-fast rules. It’s OK (hell, some might say expected) to experiment with new ideas, formats, and mediums. To that end, I recently wondered what it would be like to draw with soft pastels on black velvet.
The results were not fantastic.
For starters, I could not properly blend the colors.
Next, the loose surface of the somewhat elastic velvet moved with the tip of my pastel stick.
When I tried to press harder to get more pigment down into the material (and less in a colorful cloud above my meandering hand), all I accomplished was to snap the stick in half.
Finally, when I tried to use spray fixative to kill some of the cloud, it pretty much ate all of the color. Same with the acrylic varnish I tossed on at the end, just for shits and giggles.
So, overall, I had fun drawing a creepy clown on black velvet, but the medium just wasn’t up to the abuse.
But thanks to helpful feedback from viewers on my YouTube video, I’ve already ordered some different art supplies to take another stab at a later date.
Watch for that some time soon! I usually post the video to YouTube a day or two before it lands here (just to make sure all the kinks are worked out).
